RIP Tom Cavanagh

Northeast Sports Training would like to acknowledge with great sadness and regret the recent loss of Tom Cavanagh at the age of 28. Tom started training at NESTR soon after the inception of the facility in 1999 while in still in high school and remained a fixture here for over a decade until his untimely passing. Tom was one of the hardest working and highest achieving athletes to ever walk through these doors. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones. Tom will be severely missed and certainly not forgotten.

2010 Spring All States

Congratulations to First team all state selections Carrie Baruch (Bay View / women’s lacrosse), Bobby Indeglia (Hendricken / baseball), Ryan Poirier (LaSalle / men’s lacrosse) Rob Rinn (Moses Brown / baseball) and Jeff Roy (Hendricken / baseball). Earning second team honors were Evan Chomka (Bishop Hendricken / tennis) Tyler Cooke (Toll Gate / golf) and CJ Tsoumakas (LaSalle / baseball). Sarah Koerner (Coventry / softball), Steve Lapatin (Cranston West / baseball), Ian Larcom (Middletown / lacrosse), Peter Parrella (Hendricken / baseball) were all division selections in their respective sports.

Fall Sports Honors    

  Congratulations to Al Georgio (Exeter West Greenwich) ,who was named to the Providence Journal's First team All State Football Squad. Chris Devine (Chariho / Soccer), Nate Morris (Wheeler / Football), and Geoff Powers (Coventry / Football) were chosen as second team selections in their respective sports.

Football Playoffs 

Al Georgio of Exeter / West Greenwich was named Super Bowl MVP and Providence Journal athlete of the week after a 230 yard, 4 touchdown performance in leading to his team to a 42-28 victory over Middletown for the Division 4 state championship. In the semifinals, Anthony Riley scored on a 35 yard touchdown run in Middletown's win over Hope, and Geoff Powers of Coventry gained 130 yards and scored 2 touchdowns in a losing effort against Woonsocket.  Dan Ferdinandi's 65 yard TD pass and 27 yard field goal accounted for all of Coventry's scoring in their 10-6 first round playoff win over Westerly.

Thanksgiving Football Highlights 

Anthony Riley's 60 yard TD reception proved to be the difference in Middletown's upset Portsmouth19-13. It was Middletown's first win in the rivalry in 13 years. Pilgrim QB Justin Martin ran for a score and a conversion and threw two TD passes, including a 16 yard strike to John Paliotte, leading Pilgrim to a 22-0 win over Warwick. East Greenwich lineman Tucker Gumkowski ran back a fumble for a touchdown in EG's 26-17 victory over Narragansett.

HS Football 10 /31/09

Geoff Powers rushed for 4 touchdowns and QB / kicker Dan Ferdinandi scored another and kicked 4 extra points in leading playoff bound Coventry to a 35-6 victory over Lincoln.  

Warwick SWAT Team captures 10th in CT 

 The Warwick Police SWAT team finished 10th out of 37 squads at the Connecticut SWAT challenge held in September. The challenge featured full time military, police, and corrections SWAT units from throughout the region. Also congratulations to Warwick officer Dale Drowne who took first place in the individual fitness competition held at the challenge. 

Spring 2009

 Pekalski honored by USA Lacrosse

 Bishop Hendricken midfielder Ted Pekalski was recently selected for All American honors by USA Lacrosse. Pekalski will be heading to Christopher Newport University in Virginia to play Lacrosse this fall.

 2009 Spring All States

 Congratulations to the following athletes for first team all state selections in their various sports. Chris Costantino, Jordan Nasser, and Jeff Roy (Bishop Hendricken / Baseball), Tyler Cooke (Toll Gate / golf), and Brendan Rabideau (Lasalle / Lacrosse). Evan Marzilli (Bishop Hendricken / Baseball) and Ted Pekalski (Bishop Hendricken / Lacrosse) were second team selections. In addition Alex Rampone, CJ Tsoumakas (Lasalle / Baseball), Brendan Cabral and Jake Tillman (Scituate / Baseball) earned all division honors

Hendricken wins 2nd  straight

Bishop Hendricken won it’s 2nd straight Division 1 state baseball championship with a victory over North Kingstown. Highlights included a complete game from Chris Costantino and a home run blast by Evan Marzilli. Congratulations to Costantino, Evan Marzilli, Lee Marzilli, Dan Miller, Jordan Nasser, Pete Parrella, Jeff Roy, Angelo St. Laurent, and Alex Vescera.  

DiBiase, Lapatin selected to participate in Governor's Cup


RB / S Jared DiBiase and OL Sam Lapatin, both of Cranston West, have been selected to play for the Rhode Island squad in the Governor's Cup High School Football all star game against Connecticut. The game will be held at UConn's Rentschler field in June.

Winter all states

Congratualtions to Ted Pekalski of  Bishop Hendricken who earned first team all state honors for the 2008-09 Hockey season. Receiving second team all state honors were Evan Marzilli(Track and field, Bishop Hendricken) and Rachel Ferri (basketball, Cranston West). In addition Colin Esposito( wrestling, Cranston West), Colby Fugere (hockey, Smithfield), and Max Petti (Track and Field, East Greenwich) were all division selections in their respective sports.

Morey selected to Pro Bowl

Former Brown standout and Arizona Cardinals special teams ace Sean Morey has been selected to represent the NFC squad in the NFL Pro Bowl To be played in Hawaii this coming February.

Capuano, Cooke rated among top prospects

Max Capuano (Bridgewater Bandits / EJHL) was rated the no. 12 available prospect (1991 birth year) in the New England area according to the College Hockey Recruit Exchange. Also Tyler Cooke (Bridgewater Bandits / Empire) was rated an honorable mention  among athletes in the 1992 birth year.

Cavanagh gets on the board

Former Toll Gate and Harvard star Tom Cavanagh, now with the San Jose Sharks of the NHL, recorded his first point of the season (assist) vs. Edmonton Dec. 6.

Fall 2008

Fall All states

Cranston West running back Jared DiBiase (football) and Classical's Laura Fortunato (tennis) earned second team All state honors from the Providence Journal- Bulletin. In addition to DiBiase, Dan Ferdinandi, Corey Higgins,and Geoff Powers (Coventry), Justin Martin and John Paliotte (Pilgrim), Max Petti and Tucker Gumkowski (East Greenwich), Fred Seymour, Robert Prashaw, Al Georgio, Kyle Johansen, and Adam Sweeney (Exeter / West Greenwich), and Dan Pugliese (Scituate) were All- Division selections in Football.

EWG Super Bowl Champs

 Exeter - West Greenwich High school capped an outstanding season with a 26-6 victory over Middletown in the Rhode Island Division IV Super Bowl at Cranston Stadium. Adam Sweeney recorded 199 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns earning the MVP award for the game. Senior captain Fred Seymour led an outstanding blocking unit and Defensive end Joel Lake recovered a fumble early leading to the game's first touchdown

Marzilli signs with  South Carolina

Bishop Hendricken Centerfielder Evan Marzilli has committed to the University of South Carolina for the fall of 2009. In addition to helping Hendricken win the state championship last spring, Evan was a first team all state selection last year and a second team selection as sophomore.

David was dangerous

David Krejci had media members laughing when they asked him about his first career NHL hat trick. When queried if any of the female members of the audience had graced him with some lingerie a la Blake Wheeler, who had his first three-goal game on November 6th he just shrugged.“I wasn’t as popular as Blake, I guess,” he said, deadpan.

Lashoff Recalled

Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Lashoff, who spent the entire summer training diligently at NESTR, was recalled in December from Providence and has made an immediate impact with the big club, seeing significant playing time in his first week back in the NHL.

Phill Kessel named NHL's first star

The NHL announced today that Boston Bruins forward Phil Kessel was named NHL’s First Star of the Week for the week ending December 14.

Thanksgiving Football Highlights

Jared DiBiase led his Cranston West squad to a 41- 7 victory over archrival Cranston East with a 200 yard, 3 touchdown performance. Also Scituate QB Dan Pugliese threw 4 TD strikes in his team's 33-20  win over North Smithfield.

Brian Lashoff signed to contract with Red Wings organization

18 year old Canadian junior defenseman Brian Lashoff was signed to a contract with the Detroit Red Wings organization in September after an impressive camp as a free agent invite.

DiBiase recognized by Max Preps 

 Cranston West defensive back Jared DiBiase was named to Maxpreps. com's preseason all state football squad after leading his squad in tackles and earning second team all division honors in 2007.

Jon Mattingly earns a spot on the University of Louisville football team!

Former Lasalle Academy football athlete Jon Mattingly defied the odds and successfully walked on to the University of Louisville football team this fall, suiting up for the game vs. top 25 rival West Virginia.  

Jillson comes up big on opening day

Jeff Jillson contributed a goal and assist in HK MVD's 5-4 opening day win in Russia's  Kontinental Hockey League.

Spring 2008

Hendricken Takes Baseball Title

Bishop Hendricken defeated Lasalle Academy 12-10 at McCoy stadium to win the 2008 Rhode Island Division 1 state championship. Highlights included a spectacular home run saving catch by Tyler Brennan and a key pinch hit homer from Angelo St. Laurent. Also congratulations to Hendricken players Pat Freeman, Evan Marzilli, Lee Marzilli, Jordan Nasser, and Alex Vescera.

Marzilli, Cardarelli All-State

Congratulations to Hendricken junior center fielder Evan Marzilli for being selected to the Providence journal all state baseball team after earning second team honors as a sophomore. Also Lauren Cardarelli of Lasalle earned first team honors in women's track and field, anchoring the gold medal winning Lasalle 4 x 4000m relay squad. Meaghan McGovern (North Kingstown), Tyler Cooke (Toll Gate) and Brendan Rabideau (Lasalle) were second team selections in women's track and field, men's golf and lacrosse respectively.  In addition the following thletes were selected to all division squads in their respective sports. Brian Labianca (Cranston West), Patrick Freeman (Hendricken) and Graham Manning (Prout), baseball, and John Ryan (Lasalle), men's lacrosse

Big Day at Women's Track Championships

Lauren Cardarelli (Lasalle) and Meaghan McGovern (North Kingstown) posted excellent showings at the women's high school track championships held at Brown University. Cardarelli anchored Lasalle's  gold medal winning 4 x 400m relay team and picked up two individual medals finishing second in the 400m and third in the 200. McGovern took runner up in the hammer throw, nearly pulling off a huge upset against the defending state champion.

Cavanagh, Jillson Called Up for Playoffs

Hockey athletes Tom Cavanagh (San Jose Sharks) and Jeff Jillson (Colorado Avalanche) have been called up to their respective NHL squads to provide depth for the playoffs as they gear up for another run at the Stanley cup.

Winter 2008

Tingley Excels in EJHL

Shawn Tingley turned in an outstanding season playing for the South Shore Kings of the Eastern Junior Hockey League, scoring 58 points and helping his squad reach the playoff semifinals.  

Gumkowski Selected to Play in Governor's Cup

East Greenwich running back  Zak Gumkowski has been selected to play in the Governor's cup in June at the University of Connecticut. The annual game matches up Rhode Island's top seniors with their Connecticut counterparts.

Winter All States   

Congratulations to Lauren Cardarelli (Lasalle / women's Track and Field) and Jake Rinn (Toll Gate / Hockey) for being selected to the Providence Journal all state teams in their respective sports. Cardarelli captured her first individual title in the 300m dash and Rinn was the top goalie in the state leading his squad to third place in the championship division. Lasalle blueliner Brendan Rabideau (Hockey) was a second team all state selection and Matt Downes ( Coventry / wrestling), Julian Malakorn (Toll Gate / Hockey), Chris Cooney (Lasalle / Hockey), and Robert Hopkins (East Greenwich / Hockey) were all league selections.
