Warwick Public Schools

Summer Strength and Conditioning Camp 2022

NorthEast Sports Training and Rehabilitation (the NEST), is the official provider of strength and conditioning and athletic training / rehabilitation services, for Warwick Public Schools.  The NEST manages the on-site facilities located at Toll Gate and Pilgrim High Schools.

To reinforce our on-site efforts in developing athletes less susceptible to injury, enhancing performance, and improving mental confidence, NEST is offering all students an opportunity to take part in our Summer Strength and Conditioning Camp, at our Warwick location, at a dramatically, discounted price.

Staying injury free, during competition, is paramount to having a successful season.  A properly designed and implemented strength and conditioning program will help athletes prevent sports-related injuries and/or decrease the severity and comeback time, should an injury occur.  The side benefit of such a program is enhanced performance.  Stronger, more explosive movements, faster/quicker reaction times, and greater resistance to fatigue are some of these benefits.

Through the use of functional exercise and ‘results-oriented’ training programs, the NEST has  become Rhode Island's premier strength and conditioning facility.  We are dedicated to helping athletes progress, enhance athletic abilities, perform better, prevent injuries, and improve physical and mental confidence.  Our staff of Certified Strength and Conditioning Coaches has numerous years of proven success working with athletes of all ages and abilities. Our past and current contracts include the Boston Bruins, Providence Bruins, Brown University, and Providence college.

Owner, Mike Macchioni, has been a Sports Performance Coach for the Boston Bruins for 21 seasons.  He and his staff have worked with some of the best athletes in the world, including a number one NHL draft pick, several Rookie of the Year award winners, multiple Olympic Gold Medalists, NFL, NBA, MLB players, as well as players from every Professional sport organizations.  National Champions, at the collegiate level, State Champions, at the high school level, and numerous male and female athletes, from 23 other varsity sports, attend the NEST, each year. This year, we hope to see more High School athletes, from Warwick Public School participating.

Initial / final assessments include the following:

Vertical Jump - This will measure lower body explosiveness.

20 yard dash- This will test the athlete's ability to reach maximum velocity in a minimum amount of time.

5-10-5- The 5-10-5 agility test will test the athlete's ability to decelerate, stop and accelerate in a different direction.

300 yard shuttle - The 300 yard dash is a sprint test that will determine the athlete's conditioning level.

Sessions consist of the following:

Dynamic Warm up- The dynamic warmup is used to increase bloodflow to the athlete's muscles and reduces the chance of injury.  We do it because it is a rehearsal for the training session and improves mobility of the joints.

Linear Speed- Within linear speed we will include acceleration.  Acceleration is the ability to increase in speed.  We will cover acceleration techniques and will progress from acceleration skill work, pre-programmed acceleration drills, and reactive acceleration drills by using tools such as bungies, sleds, and parachutes.  By doing this we will be able to engrain proper movement patterns with an added stimuli which can be fun for a young athlete.

Plyometrics-   Plyometric exercises take advantage of the “elastic band” properties of muscles by rapidly shifting from a stretched position to a shortened position.  We do them because it is shown to increase muscular power and explosiveness.

Lateral Speed and Agility- Lateral speed and agility teaches the athlete to move in a multidirectional manner, as opposed to simply linear movements. We will teach it by working on proper shuffling and change of direction using drills such as crossovers and cutting.
